Stop Identity Theft with Credit Monitoring

By Carrie Davis - Posted on 22 December 2008

Imagine approaching a lender, thinking you have great credit history, only to be turned down for a loan. The rejection prompts you to check out your credit report, and you discover that it's riddled with delinquent accounts you did not open. This is often how identity theft works: the thief works stealthily behind your back, using bits of your personal information to open credit card accounts, apply for car loans, and make other big purchases. The thief, of course, has no intention of paying back his debts, and you're left holding the bag.

Don't be the next victim to go months or even years without knowing your identity has been stolen. By then, your credit rating will be in the gutter and collection agencies will have started calling. While there is no surefire way to prevent identity theft from happening in the first place, you can sign up for a credit monitoring service to notify you of unauthorized activity on your credit report. As soon as someone tries to open an account or apply for credit in your name, a credit monitoring service sends you an alert. And the sooner you know about the fraud, the easier it is to clean up the damage. You can take action to resolve the negative impact of identity theft before your credit has been completely destroyed
